The Minister for Finance when presenting his 2004 budget proposals in the Dáil provided details of the Government's strategy for decentralisation of the public service. Under these plans over 10,000 civil and public servants will be transferred to 53 separate locations throughout the country. The headquarters of nine Government Departments/Offices will move outside Dublin.

The Department was included in the first phase of the Government's decentralisation programme and has relocated to Killarney, Co Kerry. A new purpose-built office in Killarney was completed in December 2008 and staff moved in to the new headquarter before Christmas 2008.
