Minister Hanafin visits Clogherhead to officially open 2010 Prawn Festival

Fun packed weekend for all as festival provides a welcome boost - Hanafin

Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Tourism Culture and Sport visited Clogherhead Co Louth this evening (16th July 2010) to officially open the 2010 Clogherhead Prawn Festival. The festival celebrates one of the east coast’s largest fishing fleets which plays a huge role in Irish seafood. It also showcases local food, crafts and live entertainment.

During her visit to Clogherhead, Minister Hanafin had a chance to talk to members of the new Tourism Committee when she visited them in the Little Strand Restaurant. The Minister then joined members of the Clogherhead Prawn Festival Committee and special guest Packie Bonner to review the opening festival parade through the main street.

Addressing guests Minister Hanafin said “it is wonderful to witness the true community spirit coming together, as we are seeing this weekend in Clogherhead. Festivals around the country are a huge part of the traditional summer calendar and they provide an opportunity to showcase culture, people and places and greatly improve the visitor experience of Ireland. I know that this weekend there are many fun activities for all ages with the local natural amenities such as the strand and the sea all featuring as a backdrop to many events.

The village will be buzzing with a carnival atmosphere, and having your own version of Pop Idol – with the imaginatively titled Prawn Idol talent competition sure to entertain all, while there are also great musical activities planned for the harbour and pier areas.

This festival is a great boost for local people and businesses who have put so much of their time and effort into bringing it together. It is also a great attraction for visitors to Clogherhead, where they sample the warm Irish welcome, the craic of a fun packed programme, as well as marvellous freshly cooked seafood for which this picturesque fishing village is renowned.”

The festival receives funding from the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs through the Louth Leader Partnership.

Minister Hanafin concluded by thanking Chairperson of the Clogherhead Tourism Committee, Catherine Whelan, all the members of the Committee and Cllr Frank Godfrey. “I want to thank you all for inviting me to be with you today and I hope that you all enjoy the festivities over the weekend.”
