Statement from Mary Hanafin, Minister for Sport

on the death of snooker legend Alex Higgins

 

 

The Minister for Sport Mary Hanafin T.D., tonight (24th July 2010) said she was saddened to hear of the death of former snooker champion, Alex “Hurricane” Higgins and she offered her condolences to his family and friends.

 

“Alex was a bright star of snooker for many decades and his victories were a time of great celebration for the people of Belfast and all of Ireland. 

 

Alex’s skill at the snooker table entertained and enthralled his many fans. The emotion of his comeback win of the world championship in 1982 is an abiding memory for many people and his fearless play made the sport all the more popular with audiences.

 

He bravely fought ill health in the past number of years and will be remembered as truly one of the greatest players of the game.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”
